![]() ![]() ![]() One of the “trouble students” ends up defending a group of nerds from being bullied and ultimately excels in the science fair. The power dynamics are flipped as the school struggles to find a teacher capable of handling the students. ![]() Zeki and the students of class 10B may not have mastered the German language and they may be the under-educated, but Goethe High functions as a transitional space, an overlap of different social spheres, where they hold the power. A member of the faculty and members of the drama club are preparing to put on the play Romeo and Juliet, when Zeki questions its “stilted language,” calling into question the relationship between the mastery of language and its power, with respect to its comprehensibility. This breakdown of language is used to separate the low social class from the high. The title itself is a phonetic transcription of “Fuck you, Goethe” and many of the characters, including Zeki, speak ungrammatical/slang German. Zeki bluntly tells the students about how they are perceived, “You’re the loser class … You’re scum,” to which direct connections can be drawn to the words thrown around during the recent migration protests in Germany. Because it takes place in a high school, specifically a school mainly for “youth from the under-educated class,” the film plays on many stereotypes of teenage personas and also different socio-economic classes. He also makes a comment about the students’ “Nazi grandparents” in class. For example, Zeki takes his class on an unconventional field trip, which includes a visit to a Neo-Nazi’s bedroom. It never addressed social issues heavy-handedly, but a couple of topical references are made. A romance develops between the pair as she shapes him into a teacher and he helps her gain the respect of her students. It is here that he meets Lisi, a passionate, but unassertive teacher at Goethe High, who is largely ignored and bullied by her students. Although unqualified, he finds his way into the role of substitute teacher at the school in order to dig under the gym after hours. He promptly finds out that one of his friends buried the stolen money at a construction site, where Goethe High School’s gym was erected. Zeki is released from prison after serving time for a robbery. It stars Elyas M’Barek as the male lead Zeki Müller and Karoline Herfurth as the female lead Lisi Schnabelstedt. It proved to be one of the most commercially successful German films of the decade, placing second in gross income in the 2013 German yearly box office, surpassed only by The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (not German). ![]() ![]() "Our work shows that the cave bear, among the megafauna that became extinct during the Last Glacial period in Europe, was one of the earliest to disappear," Pacher said. 'One of the earliest to disappear' Pacher used new data and existing records of radiocarbon dating on cave bear remains to construct the new chronology for cave bear extinction that supports the climate change scenario. Another theory is that some virus or bacteria could have sickened populations of mega-mammals, but Pacher and Stuart think such a "hyperdisease" is unlikely to explain the timing of the extinctions or the fact that body sizes of the dying-out animals varied so much. Stuart of the Natural History Museum, London, found no convincing evidence for this idea regarding cave bears. Some researchers think humans hunted the mega-mammals to extinction, but researcher Martina Pacher of the University of Vienna and her colleague Anthony J. The question of what caused cave bears, woolly mammoths and the other large mammals to go extinct has been a mystery. During the Middle Ages, the bones of cave bears, thought to be the remains of dragons, were collected and used for medicine, the researchers say. The maximum recorded weight of both Kodiak bears and polar bears - the largest bears living today - is 1,760 pounds (800 kg), with averages of around 1,100 pounds (500 kg). ![]() Cave bears were huge, with males growing up to around 2,200 pounds (1,000 kg). Mysterious disappearance Over the years, numerous cave bear remains have been discovered in caves where the animals probably died during winter hibernation. The loss of this food supply led to the extinction of the cave bear, Ursus spelaeus, one of a group of "megafauna" - including the woolly mammoth, woolly rhinoceros, giant deer and cave lion - to disappear during the last Ice Age, the researchers wrote in a research paper published online Nov. The new extinction date, 27,800 years ago, coincides with a period of significant climate change, known as the Last Glacial Maximum, when a marked cooling in temperature resulted in a reduction or total loss of the vegetation that the cave bears ate (today’s brown bears are omnivores). ![]() Why'd they go? In part because they were vegetarians. Enormous cave bears that once inhabited Europe were the first of the mega-mammals to die out, going extinct around 13 millennia earlier than was previously thought, according to a new estimate. ![]() ![]() ![]() Given the enormous individual and societal burden imposed by those conditions 9, 10, 11, a clear insight into the mechanisms that govern acute and chronic defensive activation is important for developing targeted and successful interventions 12. In these cases, the activation is typically more sustained and out of proportion to the actual threat, which gives rise to chronic feelings of apprehension, pervasive avoidance behaviour that interferes with day-to-day functioning, and tonic physiological arousal that leads to accumulated biological wear and tear (allostatic load). ![]() However, the same systemic defensive activation that is adaptive and sometimes critical for survival is also centrally implicated in clinical conditions such as anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and obsessive–compulsive disorder 3, 8. Collectively, this activity prepares an individual to cope with threat in a way that is adapted to its perceived imminence 6, 7. ![]() They are characterized by activity in a number of loosely correlated response systems 3, 4, 5 that include subjective phenomenological experience (a feeling of dread or apprehension), overt behaviour (aimed at increasing the physical or psychological distance to the threat or decreasing its impending impact, through immobilization or active escape or avoidance) and peripheral and central nervous activation (physiological arousal and muscle tension). This is fear and anxiety in action, mobilizing an evolutionarily conserved defensive machinery to prepare for the possible occurrence (or reoccurrence) of danger.įear and anxiety are closely related, phylogenetically adaptive emotions, experienced in response to a near and imminent threat or a more distant and future threat, respectively 1, 2. Understanding individual differences in each of these phenomena, not only in isolation but also in how they interact, will further strengthen the external validity of the fear conditioning model as a tool with which to study maladaptive fear as it manifests in clinical anxiety.įollowing the experience of a serious car crash at an intersection last month, an individual might feel apprehensive in traffic, get sweaty palms and a racing heart as soon as they even think of getting behind the wheel, and exhibit extra caution when approaching an intersection. In this Perspective, we suggest that fruitful use of Pavlovian fear conditioning as a laboratory model of clinical anxiety requires moving beyond the study of fear acquisition to associated fear conditioning phenomena: fear extinction, generalization of conditioned fear and fearful avoidance. Pavlovian fear conditioning has been the prime research instrument that has led to substantial progress in understanding the multi-faceted psychological and neurobiological mechanisms of fear in past decades. However, fear becomes maladaptive and can give rise to the development of clinical anxiety when it exceeds the degree of threat, generalizes broadly across stimuli and contexts, persists after the danger is gone or promotes excessive avoidance behaviour. Fear is an adaptive emotion that mobilizes defensive resources upon confrontation with danger. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I can’t wait to see what’s next. All it took was a crane, and I was in. The final mission sees you enter the mysterious black pyramid inside the moon. So when you get to the end of the story missions and it feels like it ends on a huge cliffhanger, that’s because it is a huge cliffhanger. What we have with “Shadowkeep” is not meant to be a conclusion - it’s just the beginning of a large story arc that will be told over time. It’s kinda like if when the “Taken King” expansion for the first “Destiny” just saw the beginning of Oryx’s invasion of our solar system, and we didn’t kill him until a year later after having fought in the Taken War via a series of seasonal events. Instead, it’s basically a prologue to whatever is going to happen over the course of the next year. It was this small projection, later refined in his 1595 Arctic map, that introduced Mercator's idea of four arctic islands surrounding an open Arctic sea, at the center of which was a great whirlpool. To rectify this, he included a polar projection as in inset on the map. When Mercator published his great wall map introducing the famous Mercator Projection in 1659, he recognized the essential problem with his map was that it massively distorted the polar regions. This is one of the earliest maps to illustrate Gerard Mercator's speculative Arctic Islands. Frisland continued to appear in many forms on maps until the 18th century, when it merged with speculations that Greenland was actually two islands separated by an undiscovered channel. There is debate about the origins of Friesland, with some speculating that it a mismapping of the southern part of Greenland and other suggesting it is a double mapping of Iceland. Frisland probably first appeared on the 1561 Zeno map, but was copied by numerous subsequent cartographers including, as here, Ortelius. The king of Estotiland, seeing that his guests sailed safely with the aid of an instrument (the compass), persuaded them to make a maritime expedition to another land to the south called 'Drogeo.' While Zeno's cartography was influential in the 16th and 17th centuries, modern scholarships suggests that Nicolo's work was mostly a fictional Venetian attempt to co-opt the achievements of the Genoese navigator, Christopher Columbus.ĭrawing from both the Olaus Magnus and Zeno, Ortelius here includes both Iceland and Friesland. The language that he spoke and his subjects shared no similarity to that of the Vikings. The king of this country possessed books written in Latin, which he did not understand. Most subsequent cartographers associated Estotiland with Labrador based upon Zeno's description, … the fishing vessel 'Frise' was blown westward by a storm, and arrived at a land named 'Estotiland,' whose inhabitants traded with 'Engroenelandt.' This country, 'Estotiland,' was very fertile, and had mountains inland. This is one of the few maps to depict Estotiland and Droegeo, both drawn from the narrative of the Zeno brothers, supposedly written in the 14th century, before Columbus, but actually published by the Venetian merchant and statesman Nicolo Zeno in 1561. The map covers the northern regions from the English Channel to the just south of the North Pole and from America to Russia, including England, Scandinavia, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, and Greenland, as well as parts of America (Estotiland), the apocryphal island of Friesland, and Mercator's speculative Arctic islands.Ĭartographically Ortelius drew from a number of interesting sources including Olaus Magnus's 1539 map of Scandinavia ( Carta marina et Descriptio Septentrionalium Terrarium) for Scandinavia and Iceland Nicolo Zeno's arctic map 1561 ( Septentrionalium Partium Nova Tabula) for Estotiland, Iceland, Greenland, Icaria, and Friesland Anthony Jenkinson's 1562 map of Russia to fill in the north coast of Russia, and Gerard Mercator's world maps of 15 for the high Arctic.
